WFH Not Mandatory for Private Sector, APINDO Batam Urges Businesses to Respond Wisely

BATAM – The government’s policy encouraging a one-day-per-week Work From Home (WFH) arrangement for private sector employees is not mandatory, according to business leaders in Batam. The Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO) Batam emphasized that its implementation should be adjusted to the characteristics of each industry.

APINDO Batam Chairman, Rafki Rasyid, stressed that the policy is advisory in nature rather than a binding regulation for all companies.

“WFH for the private sector is not mandatory. Companies can adjust it based on their operational needs,” Rafki said on Wednesday (April 1).

He noted that not all sectors are suitable for remote work arrangements. The manufacturing sector, in particular, faces significant limitations, as production processes require the physical presence of workers on-site.

“In factories, it is simply not feasible. Production must continue, and workers need to be physically present,” he explained.

On the other hand, administrative and digital-based sectors are considered more adaptable to WFH. Tasks that can be performed online allow employees to remain productive even when working remotely.

“For administrative or digital-based roles, WFH is still very feasible,” he added.

Rafki also pointed out that implementing a one-day WFH policy could have positive impacts on employees, particularly in improving work-life balance. However, he cautioned that such policies must not disrupt overall business performance.

“Companies are welcome to implement it where possible, as long as productivity is maintained,” he said.

APINDO Batam therefore urged business actors to approach the policy prudently, balancing operational interests with employee welfare.
