East Kalimantan APINDO: Workers’ Welfare Requires a Healthy and Sustainable Business Ecosystem

BALIKPAPAN – Amid public scrutiny over outsourcing practices and in conjunction with International Workers’ Day, the East Kalimantan branch of the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO Kaltim) has conveyed its perspective on balancing business interests and labor welfare.

APINDO emphasized that workers’ welfare is a universal struggle that must be upheld within the framework of Indonesia’s legal system and democratic processes.

Nonetheless, the association also underscored the importance of business sustainability and corporate productivity.

“Prosperous workers are those who are employed—not those who lose their jobs,” said Abriantinus, Chairman of APINDO Kaltim, in a written statement received by Nomor Satu Kaltim on Saturday (May 3, 2025).

He noted that healthy industrial relations are not solely the result of national regulations, but more importantly, of direct interaction between employers and workers at the company level.

According to Abriantinus, such interactions must be based on mutual understanding and shared responsibility.

Harmony between employers and employees, he added, can only be achieved when both sides acknowledge that business success and job sustainability are common goals.

“The business sector requires productivity and labor stability. Meanwhile, workers need a decent, fair working environment that offers long-term security,” he explained.

Regarding outsourcing, APINDO did not explicitly express support or opposition. However, Abriantinus emphasized the importance of constructive social dialogue in responding to labor dynamics.

This includes the need for the government to establish a policy framework that is fair to both employers and workers.

APINDO also stated its readiness to actively participate in the government-established Task Force on Employment Expansion and Layoff Mitigation.

It is hoped that this cross-sector initiative will help strengthen the labor ecosystem and sustain businesses amid global challenges.

“The impact of trade wars and pressure on labor-intensive sectors is a reminder that we must develop a strategic and integrated employment agenda,” Abriantinus stated.

As part of the solution to employment challenges, APINDO Kaltim recommended several measures:

Ensuring legal certainty and a sound business climate;

Encouraging proportional increases to the minimum wage;

Providing incentives to labor-intensive industries;

Combating illegal imports and maintaining public purchasing power;

Increasing investment in workforce upskilling and reskilling; and

Ensuring Indonesia’s competitiveness as an investment destination.

Furthermore, APINDO urged all elements of the nation—including government, business actors, workers, and society—to work in synergy under the spirit of "Indonesia Incorporated."

According to Abriantinus, cross-sector collaboration is key to achieving quality economic growth and creating sustainable employment.
