Apindo Warns of the Impact of Rupiah Depreciation
Monday, 24 June 2024The current depreciation of the rupiah against the dollar remains worrying, almost reaching IDR 14,500 per dollar. Vice Chairman for Public Policy of the Indonesian Employers' Association (Apindo) Danang Girindrawardana warned that if this situation is not addressed promptly, it will be very dangerous.
The weakening of the rupiah may not yet be felt by the public, or people may not be aware of its impact. Therefore, Danang stated that sooner or later, the rupiah depreciation will affect both the industrial and household sectors.
"The weakening of the rupiah has been occurring over the last three months, and it has now broken through IDR 16,400 per dollar. You might not think about its impact, but I remind you that with the weakening rupiah, there are many impacts on your life," said Danang on his personal Instagram account, Monday, June 24, 2024.
He said that the public, including students and workers, would experience negative impacts from the rupiah's depreciation. One example is the rising prices of goods, which will burden the lower-income population.
"(The impact of the weakening rupiah) if you shop for food, the prices may increase, or the rent for housing might also go up," said Danang.
On the other hand, the weakening rupiah will also burden unemployed individuals, such as students and schoolchildren, as well as those still jobless, because their parents will face increased living expenses due to rising prices.
"Those who are not yet working and students who are not yet financially independent will burden their parents because prices and costs are becoming higher," explained Danang.
