Trump’s Trade Policies Have Limited Impact on Papua, Says Apindo

JAYAPURA – The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) has stated that the reciprocal tariff policy announced by U.S. President Donald Trump will have an effect on Indonesian businesses, particularly those involved in international trade.

Tulus Sianipar, Chairman of Apindo Papua, noted that the U.S. import tariff measures could influence the cost of imported goods and raw materials used by industries in Indonesia, including Apindo members.

“Higher import costs can impact product pricing and reduce the competitiveness of Indonesian industries in the global market,” Tulus said on Friday, April 4.

In response, Apindo acknowledges the need to adjust business and production strategies to adapt to these shifts in international trade policy.

Tulus emphasized the importance of effective communication between the government and the business community to ensure coordinated and efficient responses to changing trade dynamics.

“The risk posed by the United States’ high tariff policies is a challenge that must be addressed collaboratively by both the government and the private sector,” he asserted.

However, Tulus added that the impact of Trump’s trade policy on Papua is relatively minimal, given the region’s limited export activity.

“The effect will be more strongly felt by Apindo members in other parts of Indonesia with substantial export volumes to the United States,” he concluded.
